About Basalt |
 |
- Basalt is a dark, heavy, iron-rich volcanic rock.
- Most North American Basalt was formed more than 20 million years ago as the volcanoes slowed to a stop and the magma cooled on the upper crust.
- Basalt dominates the mid-ocean islands and surrounding regions of the Hawaiian Islands and Iceland
- Basalt often is found in tall architectural columns or as the stump-like, monolithic remains of a volcanic core, situated alone on a high ridge or plain. A prime example is Garibaldi Park’s Black Tusk mountain as seen here.
- It is fine-grained so that the individual minerals are not visible
